Roman Coins Outside the Empire

Ways and Phases, Contexts and Functions Proceedings of the ESF/SCH Exploratory Workshop Radziwiłł Palace,

Most contributions and abstracts included in this volume are papers which were presented at an Exploratory Workshop held September 2005 in the Radziwiłł Palace at Nieborów near Warsaw. Different patterns of influx and use of Roman Coins in barbarian territories are analysed in 37 contributions, written by 39 ancient historians, numismatists and archaeologists from 16 countries. In this way the entire territory outside the borders of the Roman Empire, which received Roman coinage, is covered, reaching from Scotland to Sri Lanka and from Scandinavia to Africa.  

Die meisten Beiträge und Abstracts in dem vorliegenden Band basieren auf Vorträgen, die im September 2005 auf einer wissenschaftlichen Tagung in Schloss Radziwiłł bei Nieborow in der Nähe von Warschau gehalten wurden. Unterschiedliche Muster des Zuflusses und der Verwendung römischer Münzen in den barbarischen Gebieten werden in den 37 Beiträgen von 39 Autoren – Althistorikern, Numismatikern und Archäologen aus sechzehn Ländern – analysiert. Es wurden sämtliche Gebiete außerhalb der Grenzen des Römischen Reiches einbezogen, in denen römische Münzen umliefen, von Schottland bis Sri Lanka und von Skandinavien bis Nordafrika.
